Yamatokoriyama was part of the fiefdom of the Yanagisawa Clan from
its early beginning in 1724 to 1868. The current city emblem was
taken from the flowery rhombus of the Yanagisawa crest.

The city emblem and the flag were adopted on Jan 17th 1974 by Notice No 3.
The blue flag has a white city emblem in the center. The city emblem is four
stylized kanji 山 Yama in a form of a modified crest of Yanagisawa family,
Kouriyama water caltrop. The flag proportion is 2:3.
