"GONFALONE. Drappo di colore azzurro, riccamente
ornato di ricami d'oro e caricato dello stemma della città con
l'iscrizione centrata in oro: «Città di Pontedera» (Regio
decreto in data 6 maggio 1940).
L'antico ponte sull'Era, lungo la strada che da Firenze conduce a
Pisa, è certamente all'origine del nome della città come anche
dell'immagine contenuta nello stemma. Il ponte, il casotto dal
caratteristico tetto verde e le acque dell'Era che scorrono
copiose sono segni desunti da un antico sigillo del secolo XV che
raffigurava il ponte com'era a quel tempo. Pontedera fu
dichiarata «città» con regio decreto in data 17 maggio 1930.
