Bengal - on a white field a red scimitar between three red barrels.
Does anyone know the symbolism for this flag?
Randy Young, 1 December 1998
This flag is confirmed by a European source from 1862. Another source in 1868 has the barrels and sword as yellow.

My notes say that a similar ensign is quoted by the British Encyclopaedia
Jaume Ollé, 27 January 2001
An 1848/1862 source gives a 2:3 flag with white-red-blue-white-red-blue-white-red-blue
horizontal equal stripes and the Union Jack in the canton. It appears on the
chart next to a similar but different flag for the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii)
Nozomi Kariyasu, 20-24 January 2001
Images from my old collection show this flag, and a version with stripes red-white-blue-red-white-blue-red-white-blue. It is similar to the ensigns of the British East India Company
