Description

Local Council Mazkeret Batya (meaning Batya memorial after Baron Rothschild's mother) was established in 1882 as Eqron and got 6500 inh. Situated in the Central District, Rehovot subdistrict, 5 km SE to Rehovot, 25 km from Tel Aviv and 30 km from Jerusalem. At the city hall I spotted an orange flag with black emblem (one was also with orange fringes). The municipal emblem was published in the official gazette (Rashumot), 'Publications Gazette' section (Yalkut HaPirsumim), YP 706, 22 October 1959.

The date of the establishment of this colony is undetermined. Some see it as October 1882 when the settlers signed the agreements, while others see it as early 1884 when the first four houses were built. However, the locals and most of the sources see it as 7 November 1883, the first day of the land processing in the colony.
Named initially as Eqron after the biblical town by that name [e.g. 1 Samuel 7:14] whose name was the origin for the name of the nearby Arab village of A'qir, but it changed its name in 1887 by decision of Baron Rothschild who lost his mother short time before his visit in the colony.
