Ajak town is situated in Kisvárda district in northern part of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county, in the Northern Great Plain region of eastern Hungary.
Ajak is one of the oldest settlements in Szabolcs region. The first written form of its name, derived from a family name, from 1270 is “Ayac”.
As a royal donation of Béla IV and István V, Cumans settled here, who gradually merged with the Hungarians.
During the Turkish occupation, it was almost completely depopulated. In the 18th century, Slovaks and then Hungarians from Heves county were settled,
who occupied separate parts of the village. Thus, 4 village parts were formed: Nagyajak (Magyarvég), Faluderék, Kisajak and Tótvég.
The settlers from Heves brought with them the craft of tobacco growing.
It was granted city status on 15 July 2013.

Its flag is light blue charged with its coat of arms. The name of the town is written under the shield. Ratio is 2:3.

Its shield is divided vertically into two parts. The green and blue part of the shield depicts a plowshare, representing a person who wants to achieve more production.
The cross placed on three mounds is a symbol of religious fervor, a settlement built on three islands and later connected,
which also represents the water surface surrounding the islands.
The istike (plant, flower) on the red side symbolizes the weeding of wheat fields, and the wheat ear symbolizes the result of work, "life".
The shield of arms is surrounded from below by a rosemary flower motif in a semicircle, which serves to express folk traditions and the art of painting.
The bright blue, green and red colors used in the shield of arms follow the basic colors used in folk coloring.
