Presentation of Barban

The municipality of Barban (Italian, Barbana; 2,802 inhabitants in 2001, 235 in the village of Barban) is located in central-eastern part of Istria, some 30 km north-east of Pula.

Flag of Barban

The flag of Barban is prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Barban, adopted on 28 November 2006 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 29 November 2006 in the Municipality official gazette Službene novine Općine Barban, No. 10.
The symbols were approved by the Central State Office for Administration on 3 May 2006.
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Barban, adopted on 30 July 2009 and published in Službene novine Općine Barban.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, divided into 5 x 10 "modular units", red with the coat of arms placed one unit from the top, bottom and hoist flag's edges.

Coat of arms of Barban

[Municipality coat of arms]

The coat of arms was adopted in 2004, although no formal adoption Decision was issued in the official gazette, waiting for the approval.

The coat of arms is "Or a bar vert in chief three beards sable and in base a bridge gules over water azure".
The arms are canting since a beard is called locally barbe. The connection of the name of Barban with a beard is probably a case of popular etymology. According to R. Matijašić (Antičko naslijedje u toponimiji Istre), the name of the town originates in the name of the ancient Roman family Parpanus.

Before the adoption of its modernized coat of arms, Barban used a more traditional representation of the coat of arms, topped with a golden civic crown and with two oak branches tied with a golden ribbon below.

Ceremonial flag of Barban

The ceremonial flag (photo) is a dark red gonfalon with three triangularly ending tails with a golden fringe, with the coat of arms in the centre and the municipality name in two rows above it. The coat of arms depicted is a combination of the recent shield form, as adopted in 2004, ornamented with the traditional civic crown and the oak wreath,as used in the pre-2004 version.

Table flag of Barban

The table flag of Barban (photo) is a simplified version of the ceremonial flag, vertical with a triangular ending. The flag was seen in 2008, making thus much more probable that the ceremonial flag would also be at least just as old as well - probably both from 2004 when the current design was adopted.

The flag originally adopted in 2004, together with the coat of arms, has the coat of arms at about 0.75 unit from the top and 1.5 units from the hoist (image provided in October 2004 by the Municipality administration).
The symbols are described in the Municipality Statutes Statut Općine Barban, adopted on 2 February 2006 and published in Službene novine Općine Barban; there the coat of arms is prescribed set at 1 unit from the flag's top and 2 units from the hoist.

The proposed flag was rejected by the Central State Office for Administration and never actually produced.
