The symbols of Korčula are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Grada Korčule, adopted on 16 July 1996 by the Town Assembly and published in the Town official gazette Službeni glasnik Grada Korčule, No. 4. The Decision was amended in 1998, as published in Službeni glasnik Grada Korčule, No. 3. Decision Odluka o načinu i zaštiti uporabe grba i zastave Grada Korčule, adopted on 22 March 2002 and published on 18 June 2002 in Službeni glasnik Grada Korčule, No. 2, superseded the previous Decisions but did not introduce any change in the design of the symbols. The Decision was amended in penal prescriptions by Odluka o izmjenama Odluke onačinu i zaštiti uporabe grba i zastave Grada Korčule, adopted on 22 October 2003, and by Odluka o izmjenama i dopunama Odluka Grada Korčule kojima su previđene globe odnosno novčane kazne za prekršaje, adopted on 7 July 2008 and published on 14 July 2008 in Službeni glasnik Grada Korčule, No. 5 (text).
The symbols were approved on 10 July 1996 by the Ministry of Administration.
The symbols are described in the Town Statues Statut Grada Korčule, adopted on 15 November 2001 and published in Službeni glasnik Grada Korčule, No. 5. This is repeated (with the only difference that now the Mayor instead of the Executive Board is entitled to grant the use of the symbols) in the Town Statutes Statut Grada Korčule, adopted on 1 September 2009 and published on 3 September 2009 in Službeni glasnik Grada Korčule, No. 6, and in the current Town Statutes Statut Grada Korčule, adopted on 12 April 2013 (text).

The designer of the symbols is the local architect Francesca Danese-Katić.

The flag is described in the Town Statutes as follows:

The flag of the Town is blue with the coat of arms of the Town, bordered yellow, in its centre.
The ratio of the coat of arms to the length of the flag is 1:5.
The ratio of the width to the length of the flag is 1:2.
The Town Assembly of the Town of Korčula shall prescribe with a special Decision the manner and protection of the use of the coat of arms and the flag, that is, it shall determine the rules according to which the Town Mayor of the Town of Korčula can grant use of the coat of arms and the flag to legal persons for the promotion of the interest of the Town.

The coat of arms is described in the Town Statutes as follows:

The coat of arms of the Town is in a semi-circular shield shape. The shield is blue with white (silver) stylized towers: a composition of the Town's entrance - the Revelin tower with the staircase, and on its flanks the towers of Kanavelić and Zakerjan. Standing on the staircase in front of the Town's gates is St. Mark, colored yellow, his right arm raised in blessing and holding in his left arm against his chests the Gospel book.
The ratio of the width to the length of the coat of arms is 4.2:5.

Historical symbols of Korčula

Like in some other Dalmatian towns by the end of 19th century, the Croatian parties eventually managed to get the majority in the administration of Korčula and started using the Croatian tricolour with the town arms in the centre as the town flag. The flag is displayed in the permanent exhibition of the Town Museum, No. 359, captioned "Korčula town flag, early 20th c."

The design of the arms in the flag matches well with the rendering by Ströh's Städte-Wappen von Österreich-Ungarn (1904) [stl04] and Laszowski's Grbovi Jugoslavije (1932), although both depict the shield in a simpler shape.
Laszowski notes that the "drawing of the coat of arms" was granted to "Curzola" on 17 August 1898, probably meaning that it was not the coat of arms that was granted but only a new drawing of "the ancient coat of arms", based on even older medieval seal (photo), probably from the 14th century.
