Presentation of Kotoriba

The municipality of Kotoriba (3,333 inhabitants in 2001) is located in the far east of the County, near the mouth of river Mura into the Drava, on the railway connecting Ptuj in Slovenia through Čakovec to Nagykanizsa in Hungary and further to Budapest.

Flag of Kotoriba

The symbols of Kotoriba (municipal website) are prescribed by Decision Odluka o grbu i zastavi Općine Kotoriba, adopted on 18 December 2007 by the Municipality Assembly and published on 20 December 2007 in the County official gazette Službeni glasnik Međimurske županije, No. 13.
The symbols were consecrated on 14 September 2007 in the local church.

The symbols were designed by the Heraldic Art d.o.o. company, from Rijeka.

The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue with the coat of arms, bordered yellow, in the middle.
The blue color was chosen to represent rivers Mura and Drava.

In the report on the work of the Municipality Assembly dated July 2004 (text), it is noted that the proposal by Heraldic Art was considered. As possible symbols that were discussed, although it is not clear whether they were actually proposed by Heraldic Art or discussed in the Assembly "on their own") are mentioned: river Mura, railroad, the parish church of Kotoriba and a twig/rod/whip. This was three years before the actual adoption of the current symbols.

The coat of arms is "Vert from a base wavy argent issuant a wooden fort proper".
This is a depiction of the wooden fortification of Kotori, built in the 17th century by the Zrinski of čakovec for protection against Turkish raids and where Petar Zrinski won a victory in 1646 while the remaining Turks drowned retreating in river Mura. The fort was made of wooden beams of square layout and with circular bastions in the corners; there was a wooden house in the middle for about hundred soldiers stationed there. With the end of the Turkish threat in the 18th century, the fort was abandoned and soon perished; wooden trunks are occasionally dug up from people's backyards, though. However the merchant town around it, which gained merchant rights in 1715, continued to flourish.

Kotoriba was using in the mid-1990s a coat-of-arms-like emblem consisting of a shield showing the local church and in chief inscribed the name of the municipality. The shield is set in an abstract floral ornament and topped with the coat of arms of Croatia; in the representations, this was simplified by removing all details from the crest-crown.
The church, built in 1768-1784, is dedicated to the "Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Holy Cross" (Sedam žalosti Blažene Djevice Marije i svetog Križa).
