    Overview

Information about the flag was published by Flagmaster. Arms provided by Fred Drews.
    Jaume Ollé

The issue of Flagmaster where the flag of Huehuetenango appears is  #45 (autum 1984) and the source is cited as "personal communication from the governor to Creighton S. Kern 27 February 1984". It adds "Huehuetenango is the only one of the 22 departaments whose flag is known". The flag is quoted as "bandera de Huehuetenango, convertida en un distintivo de la Ciudad de los Cuchumatanes" (flag of Huehuetenango, converted into anensign of the City of the Cuchumatanes) and the translation of Mr. Sache is a little wrong.
    Jaume Ollé, 14 January 2007

The flag appears in the 'New Flags' section on page 2 of Flagmaster 45. Most of the caption is the colour description of a b&w drawing, but in addition to what Jaume quotes as the source, etc., it adds: 'the alternating red and yellow call to mind the national flags used in the period 1851-71. The pyramid temple symbolises the ruins at Zaculeu, a shrine of the pre-Columbian Mam tribe.'
    Ian Sumner, 14 January 2007
