The Stathatos family originated from the Greek islands of Cephalonia
and Ithaca becoming steamship owners in 1883 and Lloyds 1904 shows the
flag as being for Stathatos Brothers based in Ibrail (also known as
Braila, today a main river port in Romania). Lloyds 1912 lists it under Denys A. Stathatos out of Athens and then Talbot-Booth from 1937 shows it for G.N. Stathatos. A London
office had been opened at the end of the XIXth century and during the Second World War
the family fleet operated under the control of Stathatos & Co. Ltd.,
reverting back to Greece post war but by the early 1960s control seems
to have moved back to London although ship-owning ceased soon after.
Stathatos & Co. Ltd. continued as agents and managers and Brown 1978
lists the flag under their name. They still appear to be operating as
shipping agents and brokers based in Weybridge.
