In 1939, Aktel, a group of seven
amalgamated companies (The Steam Ship Company of Greece or
Aktoploia tis Ellados) established Hellenic Mediterranean Lines (HML) in order to serve the competitive international market (as opposed to the domestic one). One
year later obliged to be a part of a national company, KDAS; as war
threatened, ships were commandeered and most of them lost in 1941. At
least one ship was active in emigrant transportation to Australia between
the Second World War and the closure of the Suez Canal in 1956. The ferry and cruising
business continues to thrive.
HML is very active in ferrying between Greece and Italy, and among the Greek
islands.

The house flag of Hellenic Mediterranean Lines is a blue triangular flag with a yellow cross and a slanted yellow trident in the upper hoist corner. It can be seen on a poster advertizing the company dated 1949.
