The flag is heraldic in origin. It shows the French Modern pattern of the
royal standards, i.e. the leopards/lions of England quartered with three fleur
de lis of France, the whole is superimposed by the red centred cross of
St.George fimbriated white.
According to source p.38 it is “the oldest and
most beautiful house flag, that has vanished from the sea, for the Muscovy
Company no longer exists.” Queen Elizabeth I., in granting it a charter to trade
with Russia, especially furs, allowed it to use the St. George’s Cross and the
English arms.
