Description of the flag

The flag is a banner of arms (ratio 1:1).
Source: The Antonian, ed. 2017; p.4
Coat of Arms:
Shield Or, a chevron Gules charged with three mullets Or and surrounded by three tau crosses Gules.
Meaning:
The arms were granted in 1952 and combine elements relating to Sir Antonin Besse, a French-born trader based in Aden, the founder. The mullets are said to be from a Besse company trademark. They are in the coat of arms of the Besse family in Switzerland. The colours are referring to the Red Sea and the desert. Though in 1961 college officials connected the name with St. Anthony of Egypt, the tau cross is associated with followers of Francis of Assisi, who considered a tau as a simplified cross due to a suggestion of Pope Innocent. St. Francis made it the cross of his Order. St. Antony of Padua, who named himself after St. Anthony of Egypt, was the 2nd Franciscan to be sainted and is likely to be the person to whom the three tau crosses refer. His statue is in the Hilda Besse building.
