Coat of
Arms:
Shield Or, a chevron Azure charged with a portcullis Or, in chief two
talbots passant Azure, in base a bell Azure.
Motto on white scroll beneath:
“SOUVENT ME SOUVIENS” (= Remember me often)
Meaning:
Lady Margaret Hall
was founded in 1878, named after Henry VII.’s mother and had been one of the
four women’s colleges. It uses a coat of arms but has deliberately refrained
from having it granted, on the grounds that all University Colleges are exempt
from the Heralds’ authority by virtue of a charter of Henry IV., confirmed by
Henry VIII, and cited successfully at the visitation of 1634. The talbots, a
hound with drooping ears, is taken from the arms of Bishop Talbot, one of the
founders. The bell is taken from the arms of the Wordsworth family. Dame
Elizabeth Wordsworth had been the first Principal of the College. The portcullis
is referring to Lady Margaret Beaufort, mother of King Henry VII and name-giver
of the college.
