Description of the flag

This Flickr photo by “ARJ2006” (uploaded 14 Mar 2007) shows the armorial banner of Lincoln College, Oxford University (GB).  An old rendition of the arms can be seen at http://www.ngw.nl/catalogue/tobaccocards/wills/willsoxcam_clip_image030.jpg.
Jan Mertens, 13 March 2009

The flag is is a banner of arms (ratio 1:2).
Coat of Arms:
Shield twice parted per pale; at dexter barry of six of of Argent and Azure, in chief three lozenges Gules, the third bar charged with a mullet Sable; in centre Argent, an inescutcheon Gules; charged with two lions passant guardant Or, armed and tongued Azure, on a chief Azure Our Lady crowned, seated on a tombstone issuant from the chief, in her dexter arm the Infant Jesus, in her sinister arm a sceptre, all or ensigned with a mitre proper; shield topped by a mitre Or with scarves of the same behind the inescutcheon; at sinister Vert three stags statant Or ordered 2:1.
Meaning:
The college was founded in 1427 by Richard Fleming, Bishop of Lincoln. The arms display in the central compartment those of the Bishopric of Lincoln (see also: Brasenose and Corpus) on a field Argent. The dexter compartment displays the arms of the founder. The mullet was probably a mark of cadency though at such an early date it is unlikely that it indicated a third son. The arms on the sinister side are those of Thomas Rotherham or Scott of Rotherham, who re-endowed the College in 1478. Rotherham was also Bishop of Lincoln, and later Archbishop of York.
