The company was founded on 1 September 1920 in Le Havre by Médard Mahieu, the owner of a garage and repairing workshop for cars, trucks and motorbikes. In 1932-1934, the company, renamed SHIPP, was involved in the trade and storage of hydrocarbons. In 1946, SHIPP started river transportation of hydrocarbons. SHIPP, involved in trade and sale of hydrocarbons, was sold in 1969 while SEPP (Société d'Entreposage de Produits Pétroliers) was created to manage the storage branch of Mahieu.
The company experienced hard times in the 1970s because of the oil crisis but activity resumed, with the creation in January 1978 of SEETRA (Société d'Exploitation et de Transport) aimed at "the management and repairing of ships and all related missions". Mahieu then limited its activity to river transportation, with the creation in April 1990 of SFTT (Société Fluviale de Transbordements et de Transport). Another company, Mahieu Maintenance, was created in 1990 for the maintenance of the fleet, followed by SNT (Société Normande de Transport) in 1992 and SMF (Société Mahieu Frères) in 1996. The shares of Mahieu were purchased in July 2004 by the Sogestran Group after a one-year negociation.

Pousseurs website. Each pusher flies two Mahieu house flags, blue with a white border and white "M3 in the middle, on bow:
- Clovis, 18 m x 8 m , 2 x 550 hp;
- Médard, 18 m x 6 m, 2 x 550 hp;
- Honorat, 16 m x 5.10 m, 2 x 380 hp;
- Pierre, 14.20 m x 5.75 m, 2 x 480 hp.
