The small company Louis Castaldi & Fils was founded in 1888 for the service of scheduled lines between Marseilles, Nice and Port-Vendres (Roussillon, close to the border with Spain). The ships left Marseilles around 18:00 and reached their port of call the next morning. All of the ships owned by the company were old (10 to 30 years), second-hand ships. The company was sold off in 1898.

As an example of the complicated history of ships at that time, the first ship bought by the company was SS Louis-C., built in Glasgow in 1880 as SS Goody for a shipowner from La Spezia (Italy); renamed SS Italia in 1885 by her new Italian owner; bought and renamed Louis-C. by Castaldi in 1889; sold to Busck in 1898; sold to Sicard in 1908; sold to Castanié in 1911; sold to Mazella in 1912; beached off in Gibraltar in 1913 and ceded to the towing company Bald; beached off again in 1915 and abandoned; repaired in 1918 and sold to Ceuta; sold to a new owner in 1921 and renamed SS Ypres; sunk on 30 November 1935 off Morocco.
