The company was founded, as Messieurs Louis Bureau & Fils, in Nantes in
1897. A law sponsoring shipping activity (loi sur les primes à la
navigation) was voted in France in 1893, which triggered the creation
of several shipping companies in the end of the 19th century.
There are at least 12 such vessels, built by the Dubigeon shipyard, in the record: Beaumanoir,
Sainte-Anne, Saint-Donatien, Saint-Rogatien, Mezly, David
d'Angers, Lafayette, Léon Bureau, Léon XIII, Anne de Bretagne, Françoise d'Amboise and Saint-Louis.

It is very probable that the company ceased to exist after the First World War. The shipping company Bureau Frères et Baillargeau, which existed in Nantes in the same period, had probably family links with L. Bureau & Fils.

According to Lloyds House Flags & Funnels (1904 & 1912), the flag of Bureau is red with the white letters "LB&F".
