La Croix-aux-Mines (456 inhabitants (2021); 1,680 ha) is a commune in the Vosges department.
The origin of the village dates back to the arrival of Deodatus of Nevers in the 7th century; there was probably only one cell built by a disciple of the holy man. The village probably grew up nearby. The silver, copper and mercury mines were exploited from the 10th century for the benefit of the monasteries of Moyenmoutier and Saint-Dié. From the 14th century, they were exploited for the sole benefit of the Duke of Lorraine. The three main mines were called Saint-Nicolas, Saint-Jean and Chipal. In the second half of the 15th century, these mines were leased by Johannes Lud de Pfaffenhoffen, secretary of the Dukes of Lorraine, and the Marshal of Lorraine Oswald, Count of Thierstein. Johannes Lud received the office of justiciar of the mines. He made a profit from it. When he died in 1504, his brother, the canon of Saint-Dié Vautrin Lud, succeeded him. The mines appear to have been left more or less abandoned after 1670. They were finally closed in 1948.

The arms of the village are blazoned:
Party per fess, 1. Or, on a bend gules three alerions argent, 2 Argent
two miner's picks Sable crossed in saltire.
But the commune uses another coat of ams as a logo, and both can be
seen on its website.
It is blazoned:
Quarterly, 1 and 4 Sable a wavy bendlet Argent flanked by two
fleurs-de-lis Or; 2 and 3 Gules a deter arm Or dressed of Argent,
issant palewise from a hillock of the same and holding a miner's pick
Or per bend sinister.
The motto is "Arte et marte".
The flag of the commune is white with this quarterly coat of arms: photo (2020).
