The municipality of Lillebonne (8,845 inhabitants in 2018; 1,466 ha) is located 40 west of Le Havre.
Lillebonne (Iuliobona) was the capital of the Caletes; destroyed by Julius Caesar, the town was rebuilt by August. Remains of Roman baths and of a theatre capable of holding 3,000 persons have been excavated, as well as many Roman and Gallic relics. In the Middle Ages the fortifications of the town were constructed out of materials supplied by the Roman theatre. The town recovered some significance under William the Conqueror.
