The marina and sea resort of Port-Barcarès was established in 1964-1972, north of the village of Barcarès, as one of the eight sea resorts built from scratch on the Mediterranean coast of Languedoc and Roussillon. Initiated in the 1960s, the Racine Mission, named for Pierre Racine, Principal private secretary of Prime Minister Michel Debré. The aim was to develop mass tourism, in the aftermath of the promulgation of a fourth week of paid vacation by the National Assembly, and to "repatriate" French tourists from the Spanish coasts.
Port-Barcarès was built on the narrow sandspit that separates the brackish Leucate / Salses lagoon (5,400 ha; main depth, 1.70 m) from the Mediterranean Sea. Like the adjacent resort of Port-Leucate, Port-Barcarès was built in "Greek" style by the architect Georges Candilis (1913-1995).
[Belveder +, No. 5, July 2019]

The flag of Port-Barcarès, a seen in September 2008, is white with the marina's logo, which reproduces the local topography. Port-Barcarès is represented by the red diamond, placed on the yellow spit separating the lagoon (lighter blue) from the sea (darker blue). The whole is framed in a thick dark blue square diamond.
The companion flag was white with the place's name in dark blue letters.
