The municipality of Calais (74,336 inhabitants in 2009; 335 ha) is located on the Pas-de-Calais, the sea bottleneck between the Channel and the North Sea, 31 km in width on 185 km in length.
Calais was seized during the Hundred Years'
War by Edward III in 1347 after a long siege. Five burghers of
the town personally surrendered to the king and asked for the
preservation of the town. The event has been popularized by a famous
bronze statue by Auguste Rodin.
Calais was definitively reincorporated to France in 1558. The old downtown was totally destroyed during the Second World War.

SRC, founded in 1951 as the Yacht Club du Nord de la France, took its present name in 1988.
The burgee of SRC is similar to the flag of Calais, charged with a red shield with two yellow keys placed horizontally head to tail, surrounded by yellow leaves.

YCC was founded in 1952.
The burgee of YCC is similar to the flag of Calais, charged with two yellow sails on a white disc placed in the first quarter of the flag.

The amateur footballers of Calais RUFC played in Stade de France the final of the French Cup 2000 against FC Nantes-Atlantique (1:2). At that time, the town hall of Calais hoisted the club's flag, horizontally divided yellow-black-yellow-red-yellow flag.
The club was founded in 1974 by the merging of the Racing Club de Calais and of the Union Sportive de Calais. The official colours of the club are a mix of the colours of the two former clubs. The official gazette of the club is called Noir-Jaune-Rouge (Black-Yellow-Red).
