The municipality of Maubeuge (29,632 inhabitants in 2018; 1,885 ha) is located 75 km south-east of Lille.
Maubeuge owes its origin to the abbey founded in the 7th
century by Saint Aldegonde. Subsequently part of
Hainaut, the town was part of the Spanish Netherlands and changed hands a
number of times before it was finally ceded to France in 1678 by the Treaty of
Nijmegen. Vauban heavily fortified Maubeuge, as ordered by Louis XIV.
Besieged in 1793 by Prince Josias of Coburg, Maubeuge was relieved by the victory
of Wattignies, which is commemorated by a monument in the town. It was unsuccessfully besieged in 1814 during the Cent-Jours, but was compelled to capitulate, after a vigorous resistance. The forts were besieged in World War I by the German troops. Maubeuge suffered heavily in World War II: 90% of the downtown was
destroyed by bombardments in May 1940.
