The municipality of Hem (18,621 inhabitants in 2018; 965 ha) is located just south of Roubaix.
Hem is one of the oldest municipalities in the North of France. Originally known as Ham, it was renamed to Hem during the 14th century. The name means "a dwelling place" and suggests a large number of households forming a hamlet.
At the beginning of the 19th century, Hem had 4,800 inhabitants. It was at first essentially an agricultural centre, which achieved industrial prosperity in 1900. At that time, factories were flourishing. Population swiftly increased after the Second World, quadrupleing in the next 20 years. From the mid-1970s, de-industrialisation resulted in a slow but regular population decline.
