The municipality of Hayange (15,888 inhabitants in 2018; 1,223 ha) is located 30 km north of Metz.
Hayange is located in the iron manufacturing region of Lorraine. Archaeological evidence indicates that iron ore was already mined here in Roman times.
During the early medieval period the town was known as "Heiyingen Villa", a name indicating a settlement within a forested area. The first mention of the town in an official record dates from 821, during the reign of Louis the Pious, Western Emperor and King of the Franks, one of the sons of Charlemagne.
Within Hayange is the former Sogerail plant, a railway rail manufacturer, dating to 1892 as Usine Saint Jacques, established by the De Wendel family. The company was formed in 1994 as a subsidiary of Usinor-Sacilor. The business was acquired by Corus Group plc in 1999, becoming part of Tata Steel Europe in 2006 through merger of the parent company. In 2016 the company and other long products businesses in the Tata Steel Europe were divested, being acquired by Greybull Capital. The last blast furnaces in Hayabge were closed in 2011.

The flag of Hayange (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo) is made of the municipal logo, blue, with "HAYANGE" in white and an orange/red stylized "H". The letters are bigger on the flag than on the original logo.
