The municipality of Amnéville (10,505 inhabitants in 2018; 1,046 ha) is located 20 km north of Metz.
Amnéville, first mentioned in 1075 as Amerellivilla, belonged to the Duchy of Lorraine until 1766 and then to France. However, towards the end of the 19th century, the village was a part of the small municipality of Gandrange.
The booming steel industry then led to a re-establishment of the place, the Rombacher HÜttenwerke built a workers' settlement on the site in 1900, which became an independent community on 15 June 1902, as Stahlheim. After the area returned to France, the new municipal administration decided in January 1919 to re-establish the name Amnéville.
Since 1986 the municipality, also called Amnéville-les-Thermes, has been the location of nationally important spa and leisure facilities, such as the Saint Éloy thermal baths, Thermapolis and Villa Pompéi. There is a concert hall with 12,000 seats, a ski hall with 650 m of slopes and a zoo (located in fact on the territory of Hagondange). The municipality also manages an 18-hole golf course and a casino.
