Presentation of Séné

The municipality of Séné (8,905 inhabitants - Sinagots - in 2007; 1,994 ha) is located at the end of the Gulf of Morbihan, east of the town of Vannes, southern Brittany.
Today a periurban town, Séné lived in the past from agriculture and fishing. The tiny port of Port-Anna is one of the last traditional fishing ports in the Gulf of Morbihan, specialized in cuttlefish, clam and eel alevin (civelle) fishing. The former salt marshes are now a nature reserve and a bird sanctuary.

Séné is the cradle of the sinagot sailboat, a ship used for fishing in the Gulf of Morbihan until the middle of the 20th century. A sinagot has red sails, tanned with a mixture of mutton suet and ground pine bark, and a black hull, coloured by coaltar.
The most famous of the modern sinagots, Les Trois Frères (The Three Brothers), was launched in 1943 by the Séné-based fisher Patern Lefranc, who named it for his three sons. In 1983, the association Les Amis du Sinagot purchased it, under the name of Solveig. After complete revamping and restoration of the original name of the boat, the association obtained in 1985 the protection of Les Trois Frères as an historical monument. Another sinagot, Joli Vent, launched in 1958 and one of the first sinagots specifically built for yachting, was saved from destruction in 2006 by Les Amis du Sinagot.

Flag of Séné

The municipal flag of Séné, as hoisted on the town hall - at least since 1999 - and on the Les Trois Frères sinagot (photo), is white with the municipal coat of arms surmounted by the name of the municipality written in black capital letters.

The municipal arms of Séné are (image and blazon):
D'azur au sinagot de sable sous voiles de gueules, adextré d'un pal de sinople à l'échassier contourné d'argent, soutenu d'une champagne fascée ondée d'argent et d'azur; au chef d'argent à cinq mouchetures d'hermine de sable ("Azure a sinagot sable sailed gules with in the dexter a pale vert a wading bird argent contourned standing on a sea wavy fessy argent and azure, a chief argent five ermine spots sable").
