Presentation of Guidel

Guidel (11,743 inhabitants in 2020; 5,229 ha) is a commune in the Morbihan department.

Guidel has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as evidenced by the various megalithic monuments discovered in the area over the years. Then the town experienced its Roman period with the main road from Darioritum (Vannes) to Aquilonia (Quimper). The Bretons arrive in the 5th and 6th centuries followed by the Normans in the 9th and 10th centuries. At the same time, serious epidemics of leprosy raged in the region. In 938, the Normans were driven out of the territory. It is also at this time that the medieval habitat of Pen er Malo falls.
Between 1341 and 1365, one of the episodes of the Hundred Years War, the war of succession, takes place in Guidel between supporters of Count Jean de Montfort and those of Charles de Blois. Jean de Montfort, victorious, becomes Duke of Brittany under the name of Jean IV.
In 1744, the France of Louis XV went to war against England and in 1746, the English landed at Guidel in order to attack the port of Lorient.

The flag of Guidel (photo, 2019) is white with logo.

Olivier Touzeau, 1 January 2022

The logo, inaugurated in January 2011, was designed by the LC Design agency. Part of a "rejuvenation" and a "modernization" of the town's image, it replaced the previous logo that had been designed in 1990 by Ronan Goualc'h, while keeping its emblematic blue, green and yellow colors. The four squares with different colors and shades recall the different aspects of Guidel. The "G"ending with an arrow is a symbol of movement. Accessibility is highlighted by the junction in the center of the four blocks, while the sea is emphasized by color shades where blue predominates (Source: Le Télégramme, 11 January 2021).
