The municipality of Olivet (22,168 inhabitants in 2018, therefore the 2nd most populated municipality in the department; 2,339 ha) is located just south of Orléans.
Olivet was first mentioned in the 11th century, as Saint Martin
du Loiret. The building of the St. Martin church began in the 13th century.
The name Olivet comes probably from Mount olivte in Jerusalem.
The village suffered severe destructions during the Hundred Years' War, especially during the siege of Orléans.
During the 19th century the banks of river Loiret (13 km), which is both a tributary and
a resurgence of the Loiret, became a place of leisure, while while most of the
territory was still dedicated to flower, vegetable and fruit cultivation.

The flag of Olivet (photo, photo) is vertically divided green-red. The colors are derived from the municipal arms, "Argent, a cross potent gules cantoned with four crosslets of the same, chapé vert two wavy barrulets argent".
