L'Isle-d'Abeau (17,096 inhabitants, 911 ha) is a French commune located in the Isère department.
Historically, L'Isle-d'Abeau was a small village established on a hill surrounded by marshes like an island. The commune then underwent a major change by integrating itself into the project of the new town of L'Isle-d'Abeau, the creation of which was decided in 1968 by the Interministerial Committee for Regional Planning (CIAT), an organization designed by the Georges Pompidou Government.
On January 10, 1972, the Public Establishment for the Development of L'Isle-d'Abeau (EPIDA) was created. A few months later, the Community Syndicate for the Development of the New Agglomeration of L'Isle-d'Abeau (SCANIDA) replaced the SIAVNIA and brought together 21 municipalities including that of L'Isle-d'Abeau. This number was reduced in 1978 to eight municipalities, then to five municipalities (Four, L'Isle-d'Abeau, Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, Vaulx-Milieu and Villefontaine) in 1983. On September 15, 1984, the five remaining municipalities formed the New Agglomeration Syndicate (SAN) of L'Isle-d'Abeau. On January 1, 2007, the SAN was replaced by an agglomeration community of 23 municipalities, named the Porte de l'Isère Agglomeration Community (CAPI). This took over the management of development operations from 1 January 2012.
