The municipality of Melesse (6,958 inhabitants in 2019; 3,239 ha) is located 15 km north of Rennes.
From Roman Gaul, archaeological sites have provided clues: indigenous farms, tiles, ceramic shards, fragments of amphorae, a residential villa. During the Hundred Years War (from 1337 to 1453) and the wars of religion, troops and bands of brigands sacked and ransomed the parish. In 1591, Captain Corbesson, in the service of the Duke of Mercoeur, reduced the village to ashes, with the exception of the Church. From the lordships of the Ancien Régime remain some beautiful buildings: Château de Beaucé, manors of Plessix, la Quenouillère, la Grimaudais, Fresnay. After the revolutionary turmoil and the Prussian occupation with the fall of Napoleon, the inhabitants of Melesse developed their particular vocation: agriculture, linen production and craftsmanship. Melesse was then classified as a large and rich commune by the prefecture. The 19th century also represents the golden age of earthen architecture: farms, bakeries, stone ovens characterize the landscape in Melesse.

The flag of Melesse (photo, photo, photo) is white with the municipal arms, "Or, a bend lozengy sable", and the name of the municipality below, in black Tw Cen font.
It is flown together with the flag of Spain (Melesse is twinned with Enguerra, Valencia) and the flag of the former commune of Thaon-les-Vosges (no information found about this partnership).
