The municipality of Brécé (2,059 inhabitants in 2019; 719 ha) is located 15 km east of Rennes.
Brécé was first mentioned in 1130, then belonging to the abbey of Saint-Melaine in Rennes. The lord of Gosné had the church erected in 1158 and the lord of Montigné, who owned land, created the parish. Pope Lucius III confirmed in 1185 the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Melaine as owner of the church and parish of Breceium, which had then 800 inhabitants.
The building of the Paris-Rennes railway during the Second Empire shaped the development of the town, which is crossed by the railway line. In the beginning of the 20th century, many inhabitants worked at the foundry located in the neighboring town of Servon-sur-Vilaine.
