The municipality of Bourgbarré (4,515 inhabitants in 2019; 1,420 ha) is located 20 km south of Rennes.
Bourgbarré, reported as a parish in the 12th century, was probably formed around a feudal moat defending the border line between the Franks and Bretons. Only four houses still remain from the feudal period, around the primitive church that was rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century.
Count Gabriel I of Montgommery lived in the manor of Vayrie, built in the 13th century by the lords of Bourgbarré. A French nobleman of Scottish extraction, Montgommery was captain of the Scots Guard of King Henry II, whom he mortally injured during a tournament. He subsequently converted to Protestantism, the religion that the Scots Guard sought to suppress. A leader of the Huguenot party, he was beheaded in Paris on 26 June 1574 upon order of Catherine de Medici.
