La Réole (4,396 inhabitants in 2021; 1,253 ha) is a commune in the Gironde department.
There is evidence of a Roman villa, La Pontesa, with an adjoining cemetery which has been dated to be from the 3rd or 4th century. There were other Roman villas nearby.
La Réole grew up round a monastery founded in the 7th or 8th century, which was reformed in the 11th century and took the name of Regula, whence that of the town. During the Middle Ages, La Réole was a royal town, administered by six jurats (municipal officers), who were elected by the town's bourgeois. The law was upheld in the name of the King. Fortified city, it was built on a rocky promontory opposite of the Garonne and to protect it, 3 enclosures were established, respectively in the 13th 14th and 15th centuries.
During a significant period of time, La Réole was the second most important town of Guyenne, after Bordeaux. Twice during the 17th century in 1678 and 1690, Bordeaux's parliament was exiled to La Réole.
The coat of arms of La Réole is blazoned Azure, a castle with two towers and embattled with two turrets, Argent, port and windows and masoned Sable, under three fleurs de lis Or aligned in fess.

The former banner, before 2010, had a modified logo with blue field under the lower shape of the logo. It was flown next to stylized banners for Guyenne (vertically divided 1/3 white and 2/3 red, debruised by a half-lion) and for EU (vertically divided 1/3 white and 2/3 blue, three yellow stars from the european flag set on the two stripes): photo (2009), photo (2010).
