Cléder (Breton: Kleder; 3,584 inhabitants on 3,744 ha) is a commune in
the Finistère department
According to legend, Saint Ké—an Irish saint—built a small monastery
on the site of the current church in Cléder, housing relics brought
from his homeland. It was also here that he buried his disciple, the
hermit Kerian. In the 18th century, church authorities ordered the
destruction of what was reputed to be Saint Ké's tomb in Cléder, as
the site had become a locus for the persistence of pre-Christian
religious practices.
During the 10th or 11th century, Cléder became an independent parish,
separated from Plouescat and falling under the jurisdiction of the
Bishopric of Léon.
The town of Cléder developed on the plateau—at an elevation of around 45 meters—set back from the coast. Like most neighboring communes, it was situated inland to avoid the threats posed by the coastline, specifically the danger of raids by invaders. The town boasts both extensive farmland and a coastal area featuring vast, fine-sand beaches and unspoiled natural scenery.

No municipal flag recently observed in Cléder.
Pascal Vagnat reported the existence of a white flag with the former
logo and on it the name of the commune in Brush script font, in use
before at least 2010: photo.
