The municipality of La Flotte (locally, La Flotte-en-Ré (2,785 inhabitants in 2019; 1,232 ha) is located on the northern coast of Ré island.
La Flotte developed around a port trading wine and salt, subsequently a fishing port and now mostly a marina (200 berths on pontoons and 150 berths in organized moorings).
On 6 November 1627, the French Guards regiment attacked the English troops,
commanded by George Villiers, Duke of Buckingham, who besieged the citadel of
Saint-Martin-de-Ré, defended by Jean du Caylar de Saint-Bonnet, Marquis de Toiras. After causing the English assault to fail, the French Guards
retreated through the town of La Flotte, burned three English vessels in the port and returned to Fort La Prée. Built in 1625, the fort was partially suppressed by Vauban in 1685.

The flag of La Flotte (photos, July 2021) is dark blue with a white bar on a white circle, like a greek letter θ, with letters "L" and "F" above and beneath the bar at hoist.
