Presentation of Nauviale
Nauviale (591 inhabitants, 2,619 ha) is a commune in the Aveyron department.
Two castles were situated on the municipal territory.
- Combret Castle is a 13th-century castle, remodeled in the 16th and
18th centuries. It is located in the village of Combret on a hillside
south of the village of Nauviale. Its elongated main building and
square tower can still be seen. It belonged to the lords of Beaucaire,
who also owned another castle, now in ruins, in the commune: Beaucaire
Castle.
- Beaucaire Castle (Belcayre) was first mentioned in texts beginning
in the 12th century and successively belonged to powerful families of
Rouergue. Besieged several times during the Hundred Years' War and the
Wars of Religion, this fortified building was then abandoned from the
18th century onwards. Today, Beaucaire Castle is a remarkable example
of medieval military architecture, with its red sandstone rubble wall
and six towers. Unfortunately, few remains have survived due to
demolitions at the beginning of the last century, which left only part
of the 14th-century wall and the base of the keep tower.
In 1940, several families from Fleury-en-Moselle (in Lorraine) found
refuge in Nauviale. The links between the two towns have endured, and
a twinning charter was signed in 2025.

Flag of Nauviale
Nauviale has a white flag with the coat of arms: picture (2015).
Before September 20, 2015, the town of Nauviale had never had a coat
of arms. A few coats of arms relating to the history of the Château de
Beaucaire can be found in the town, such as the keystone on the
entrance door of the church in the village of Nauviale, but no
official coat of arms has been recorded. The municipality wanted to
create a coat of arms that evokes the remarkable characteristics of
the town. With the voluntary help of Mr. Jean-Fran ois Binon, the coat
of arms of Nauviale was born and presented during the 2015 Heritage
Days.
Elements of the Coat of arms:
The horse's head = an attribute of Saint Martin
The waves = symbolize the Dourdou and the Créneau
The lion-faced leopard = in the coat of arms of Aveyron
The ruined tower = recalls the ancient castle of Belcaire
The entire tower = recalls the castle of Combret
