Presentation of the regatta

The international regatta organized on 14, 15, 18 and 20 April 1914 by Société des Régates Cannoises (now, Yacht Club de Cannes) attracted some of the most famous yachtsmen of the time. King of Spain Alfonso XIII, named President of Honor of the organizing yacht club, competed on his yacht Tonino.
The participant's list (leaflet), kept in the municipal archives, gives for each competitor the yacht club of affiliation, as well as the names of the boat, of the shipyard where she was built, and of the architect who designed her. The owner's private signals are also illustrated.

His Royal Majesty Alfonso XIII - Tonino

1. His Royal Majesty Alfonso XIII, King of Spain - Tonino
The private signal is triangular, purple or blue with a golden monogram in the center.

Alfonso XIII fostered shipbuilding in Spain, first as a source of employment. He developed also the building of yachts, which was uncommon in Spain at the time. It was believed for long that the king owned six yachts, but a recent study revealed that he indeed owned 27 of them.
The legendary Giralda served as the royal yacht, but also as a vacation residence and racing yacht competing in regattas organized in Spain, England, France and other Mediterranean countries. The Giraldilla, built at the Ferrol arsenal, was the first yacht owned by the king. The Mouriscot, also built in Ferrol, was inaugurated in the Mouriscot Palace, Biarritz (France) by Princess Victoria Eugenia.
Another two yachts entered the legend of yachting in Spain and exemplify the passion of Alfonso XIII for this sport, the Hispania and the Tonino. According to Luis Tourón Figueroa, the Tonino (photo), launched in 1911 was "the preferred boat of the royal family", who used it until seized in 1931 by the republican authorities.

The bankers Émile (1840-1913) and Isaac Pereire invested in the modern means of transportation, establishing the first commercial railway line between Paris and Saint-Germain and the legendary Compagnie Générale Maritime and Compagnie Générale Transatlantique shipping companies. They fostered the urban reorganization of the the posh districts of Paris and the development of the sea resort of Arcachon, served by the Compagnie des Chemins de Fer du Midi, another of their railway lines. Crédit Immobilier, the bank founded in 1852, was the "Empire's bank", funding several projects connected to the industrial revolution, until bankrupted in 1868.
Eleda (photo) still sailed in 1936, finishing 6th in the regatta of the Cup of the President of the Republic, ran in September in Arcachon.
