The official name of the institution is "Fiji Police Force", formerly known as "Royal Fiji Police Force". The epithet "Royal" was dropped in 1987, when Fiji was proclaimed a Republic - but the Royal Crown is still used as a crest on the badge. The flag shows a monochrome, simplified version of the badge.

The Latin motto "Salus populi" means "The
Welfare of the People". It is derived from Cicero's "De Legibus" (On Laws), III,
III, VIII: "Ollis salus populi suprema lex esto" (The welfare of the people
shall be the supreme law). "Salus populi suprema lex esto" is the motto of the
State of Missouri (USA).
