Presentation of Marasia

Naviera Marasia was established in 1963 by Jaime Yllera, from Santander, and Eduardo Bages, from Barcelona, to transport jute from the Gulf of Bengal to Spain.
Starting its operations with four ships chartered to Empresa Nacional Elcano, Marasia acquired two ships in 1964, La Rioja (subsequently, Antartico) and Rio Umia (subs., Indico), and another one in 1972, Pedro de Alvarado (subs., Pacifico). More ships were chartered for more or less long periods.
Marasia soon operated scheduled lines between Europe and the western coast of South America, West and East Africa, Asia and Australia.
Marasia acquired in 1978/1979 its only two new-built ships, Maresam and Emporda, which sailed until the end of the company.

In the 1970s, most of the company's shares were acquired by Banco Catalana. Close to bankruptcy, the bank was taken over by Banco Vizcaya, while Marasia was taken over by Fondo de Garantía de Depósitos and eventually sold to Naviera García Miñaur in early 1987. A few months later, the two aforementioned ships were seized by Banco de Crédito Industrial, which transferred their management to Sociedad de Gestión de Buques. The SGB soon sold them to Lexmar International.
