The municipality of El Perdigón (753 inhabitants in 2009; 5,122 ha) is located 10 km from Zamora. The municipality is made of the villages of El Perdigón (capital), San Marcial (164 inh.) and Tardobispo (102 inh.).
El Perdigón (lit., "the young partridge") was most probably named for
the Latin word perdis, perdicis, "a partridge". The place might have
been crowded with such birds and famous for hunting.
The village is located in a main wine-producing area, therefore its
local name, El Perdigón del Vino. Some 300 wine cellars are located on
the municipal territory, the oldest ones dating back to 1550. Forming
a huge, deep (6-15 m), dark and fresh network, the cellars, to be
accessed only via narrow, steep scales, have been used for centuries
for the maturation of wine. Some of them have been transformed into
wine bars or restaurants.

Castilla y León, No. 85, p. 5,952 (text).
