The municipality of Cañizo (aka Cañizo de Campos; 287 inhabitants in 2010; 4,201 ha; unofficial website) is located 40 km from Zamora.
Cañizo was originally known as Cannizo, a name derived from Latin
canna, "a reed" (Spanish, caña), meaning "a place planted with reeds".
The Roman statue known as the Cañizo Philosopher, dated from the
3rd-4th centuries, is kept in the Zamora Museum.

The flag and arms of Cañizo are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 16 April 1999 by the Municipal Council, signed on 30 June
2000 by the Mayor, and published on 24 July 2000 in the official gazette of Castile and León, No. 143, p. 9,189 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Rectangular flag, with proportions 2:3, made of a yellow panel with a blue diagonal stripe running from the upper hoist to the lower fly, of 1/3 of the flag's hoist.
Coat of arms: Or a bend azure in chief a tower gules masoned sable in base three spikes vert. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.
The flag is, therefore, a simplified banner of arms, charges excluded.
The Royal Academy of History accepted the proposed arms and flags
"without any objection".
