Presentation of Tiedra

The municipality of Tiedra (350 inhabitants in 2009; 4,716 ha; municipal website) is located in the west of Valladolid Province, 60 km from Valladolid.

Tiedra was built on the site of a pre-Roman town known as Amallobriga, subsequently settled by the Romans. However, the first medieval castle of Tiedra (9th century) was not built on the Roman ruins but some 100 m away, controlling the natural pass linking Tierra de Campos and Campo de Toro. A significant market village in the 11th century, Tiedra became a Royal domain in 1171. In the 13th century, Tiedra was made the capital of an alfoz (group of village) ruled by the Téllez de Meneses.
King Peter I conquered Tiedra in the middle of the 14th century; his son Henry II transferred the town to the Alburquerque. John II transferred it again to Álvaro de Luna, using in 1430 the castle to jail the Bishop of Palencia and the Count of Haro. After the battle of Olmedo, Pedro Girón, Master of the Order of Calatrava, became the ruler of Tiedra, which would belong to the house of Osuna until the 19th century.
