Presentation of Los Huertos

The municipality of Los Huertos (171 inhabitants in 2010; 1,727 ha; unofficial webpage) is located in the south-center of Segovia Province, 15 km from Segovia.

Los Huertos was known in the Middle Ages as Sancta María de los Huertos, the village's name being shortened at the end of the 16th century. It belonged to the Community of the Town and Land of Segovia. The local festival El día de la quema (The Day of the Blaze) recalls a blaze that once was about to destroy the village.

Symbols of Los Huertos

The flag and arms of Los Huertos are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 27 April 1999 by the Municipal Council, signed on 4 November 1999 by the Mayor, and published on 24 November 1999 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 227, p. 11,430 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Proposal No. 1. Quadrangular flag, with proportions 1:1, green with a blue bend. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Proposal No. 3. Quarterly, 1. Azure a vase argent with five lilies of the same terraced vert, 2. and 3. Gules a two-staged aqueduct argent masoned sable over ten rocks argent, 4. Gules the chains of Navarre or all over a griffin of the same. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.

The first quarter is a kind of rebus of the village's old name, the lilies symbolizing St. Mary (Sancta María) and the terrace the gardens (los huertos). The second and third quarter represent the Roman aqueduct of Segovia, portrayed on the coat of arms of several municipalities once part of the Community of the Town and Land of Segovia.
