Presentation of Barbolla

The municipality of Barbolla (214 inhabitants in 2012; 2,613 ha; unofficial webpage) is located in the north of the Segovia Province, 70 km from Segovia. The municipality is made of the villages of Barbolla, El Olmo (34 inh.), Corralejo (deserted) and Villarejo (deserted).

Barbolla was mentioned for the first time in 1247, as Barvolla. The village is named for the old Castilian word borbollar (modern form, burbujear, "to foam"), referring to a foaming source found in the neighbourhood by the early re-settlers. Barbolla then belonged to the Community of the Town and Land of Sepúlveda.
El Olmo ("The Elm") was known in the middle of the 13th century as Sancta Maria del Olmo. The skeleton of a dead elm killed by graphiosis, located close to the Romanesque church, recalls the etymology of the place.
