Presentation of Gallegos de Solmirón

The municipality of Gallegos de Solmirón (155 inhabitants in 2009; 3,082 ha; municipal website) is located in the southeast of the Salamanca Province, 60 km from Salamanca.

Gallegos de Solmirón was resettled in the 12th-13th centuries by Galician (gallegos) colonists. The village, part of the domain of the Five Villages, ruled by the Dukes of Alba, had famous lords: Christopher Columbus, Pedro de Toledo y Leyva - made Marquis of Mancera and Vice Roy of Peru by King Philip IV -, and Antonio Sebastián de Toledo Molina y Salazar - also Marquis of Mancera and Vice Rey of New Spain, Grandee of Spain and Minister of Philip V.

Symbols of Gallegos de Solmirón

The flag and arms of Gallegos de Solmirón are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 24 May 2001 by the Municipal Council, signed on 3 January 2002 by the Mayor, and published on 21 January 2002 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 14, p. 1,295 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: White panel with a black serrated border, in the middle the Cross of the Order of St. Dominic in the same design as on the second quarter of the coat of arms.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Argent a bordure serrated sable a cross flory sable and argent of the Order of St. Dominic charged on each arm's end with four scallops argent fimbriated sable and in the middle with an escutcheon divided by Charles V's Pillars of Hercules charged respectively with an Imperial and Royal crown and a quarter gules with the motto "Plus Ultra", 2. Checky eight pieces argent and seven pieces azure, representing the Toledo family. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown [detailed description skipped].

The arms of Charles I / Charles V must recall that the monarch, after having abdicated, overnighted on 9 November 1556 in Gallegos de Solmirón on his way to the Yuste monastery. The arms checky argent and azure are commonly used in the municipal heraldry of places once ruled by the Dukes of Alba.
