The municipality of Grijota (1,703 inhabitants in 2010; 2,858 ha; municipal website) is located 5 km from Palencia.
Grijota is named for Igrejota / Elesiota, Latin ecclesia alta, "the high church", referring to an old sanctuary. Bishop of Palencia Raimundo I mentioned the ecclesia alta during a council; In 1020, Sancho called it Egelsiota, while the Silva Palentina manuscript lists Eclesiota as Grijota. Resettled in the late 9th century, Grijota was transferred, together with neighboring villages, by Alfonso VIII to the Bishop of Palencia.

The flag and arms of Grijota are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 13
February 1995 by the Palencia Provincial Government, signed by the
President of the Government on 22 February 1995, and published on 2
March 1995 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 43 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: Quadrangular flag, with proportions 1:1, diagonally divided from the upper left angle to the lower right angle, white and crimson. In the middle of the flag is placed the municipal coat of arms in full colors.
Coat of arms: Shield in Spanish shape. Gules a church or masoned sable port and windows azure. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown.
