Presentation of Villasabariego

The municipality of Villasabariego (1,228 inhabitants in 2010; 5,975 ha) is located in the southeast of León Province, 20 km of León. The municipality is made of the villages of Villasabariego (capital), Villafale, Villiguer, Villacontilde, Valle de Mansilla, Vega de los Árboles, Palazuelo de Eslonza, Villimer, Villabúrbula, Villafañe and Villarente.

Villasabariego is the site of the old town of Lancia, mentioned by several Roman historians (Florus, Paul Orosius, Cassius Dio, Ptolemy and Pliny). During the Asturian War, the town, a 30-ha oppidum (citadel) called by Cassius Dio "the most important Asturi settlement", was seized in 26-25 BC by Octavius. Not destroyed by the Romans, Lancia was incorporated in the 1st century into the Roman Empire. Under the Flavian emperors, Lancia was granted the title of municipium flavium; the Lancia-born Lucius Iunius Maro made a brilliant career in the Hispano-Roman administration. Following the decline of the Empire, Lancia was progressively abandoned in the 4th-5th centuries. The most significant buildings of Lancia excavated up to now are the thermae and the market. Several artefacts are shown in the Villsabariego Archeological Hall.
