The municipality of Villaornate y Castro (400 inhabitants in 2010; 4,828 ha) is located in the southeast of León Province. The municipality was established in 1976 by the merging of the two villages of Villaornate (228 inh.) and (y) Castrofuerte (172 inh., locally known as Castro); in April 2010, more than 50% of the inhabitants of the two villages voted for the restoration of two separate municipalities, which, however, is not permitted by the Law on Local Affairs for municipalities with less than 1,000 inhabitants (La Crónica de León, 27 April 2010).

Symbols of Villaornate y Castro

The flag and arms of Villaornate y Castro are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 8 January 1999 by the Municipal Council, signed on 25 January 2000 by the Mayor, and published on 7 February 2000 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 25, p. 1,493 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, with proportions 2:3, made of two equal vertical stripes, at hoist white with a red cross throughout, at fly red with a white castle masoned sable.
Coat of arms: Argent a tinaj [big jar] proper mantled curvy gules dexter a church argent sinister a castle of the same masoned sable. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.
