The municipality of Riaño (525 inhabitants in 2009; 9,763 ha) is located in the northeast of León Province, 90 km of León.
The building of the Riaño man-made lake caused in 1987 the flooding (indeed the destruction before flooding) of eight villages, including the original village of Riaño (Viejo Riaño / Old Riaño). The local opposition to the project culminated in July 1987 after a villager whose house had to be destroyed committed suicide; a street riot was suppressed by the police and ten people, including the mayor of Riaño, were jailed for a while (El País, 12 July 1987). Some 25 years later, the opponents have not given up; they recently asked for a decrease in the water level and the restoration of some pastures (Diario de León, 23 February 2010).

The flag and arms of Riaño are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 13 November 2002 by the Municipal Council, signed on the same day by the Mayor, and published on 26 November 2002 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 229, p. 15,713 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:
Flag: With proportions officially prescribed in the relevant provincial legislation, that is 1.98 [m] x 1.52 [m], monochromous flag of purple color, with, in the middle and on both sides of the flag, the municipal coat of arms. Flags of the same design, but with dimensions 1 [m] x 1.40 m may be used inside the Town Hall.
Coat of arms: Vert a castle argent masoned and port and windows sable over a mount proper in base a river wavy azure and argent [...]. The shield surmounted with a Royal Spanish crown closed.
